Living Walls: The ultimate raised-bed gardens

Patrick Blanc - Musée du Quai Branly

The Living Walls are also known as “Vertical Gardens”,”Garden Murals”,”Plant Canvases” in modern era. Conventionally, by vertical gardens, planting a tall tree or training a vine to create a living wall comes to mind but things have changed in last two decades.

Vertical gardening is  especially useful where there is shortage of space but not of imagination. These living walls look beautiful with their green leaves, colorful vegetables vertically erected on front of houses. These Vertical Gardens or Living Walls can be grown on any type of wall inside or out with or without soil. These Living Walls are becoming very popular due to their natural beauty and natural air purification.

Its also becoming the subject of art.  Musee du quai Branly musuem near the Eiffel Tower in Paris is the best example of vertical garden work by the famous artist Patrick Blanc

    In one line,

“Vertical gardening makes it easier to have ornaments and eat them, too.”

    Group Editing a Document

    Google Docs

    Image via Wikipedia

Group Editing is now becoming increasingly important as more and more people are interacting online and most of the time not sitting under one roof. To work on a document, the slowest format is to edit a copy and then send it to one or more persons who are willing to work on the same document and then wait for them to edit it and give you a green signal to edit it.

Wikipedia can be used to edit public documents that are copyright free.

Google Docs is one service that can be used to group edit a document.

CompareMyDocs.com  is a free service that displays the original document with colored blocks with collaborators suggestions which can be accepted or rejected alongwith hiding or showing the comments. The service is still in beta and only works for simple documents without images and hyperlinks.

Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Nowadays, Cell Apps are getting attention in every tech magazine and it seems that you are either dumb or too naive if you don’t know a good deal about Apps.

Ihone took the lead in making Apps popular followed by blackberry. Iphone has now more than 100,000 Apps with a great number of downlaods , more than 1 billion. Although Android is quite new as compared to Iphone and blackberry but it is catching quite quickly and already has more than 17,000 Apps and lot more to come in coming days. Essential Android Apps varies with your taste and preferences but i think following Apps are more or less popular with all users(you can disagree but not much :) ).

    Astrid:

A nice file manager and todo list for those who find it hard to remember things. It syncs smoothly with Remember the Milk.

    Google Maps:

Its really hard to get lost with google Maps in your hands even if you are on foot.

    YouTube:

PreInstalled YouTube App on all Android phones

    Quick Search Box:

Right on the main screen is quick search box on Android phones wheren you can search contacts,Apps and Google by typing or speaking.

    Google Voice

Have just one number for all the world with Google voice. Record messages in voice and text, free SMS and cheaper international calls.

    Google Contacts:

All Google contacts in gmail are automatically synced with your Android phone which is really a great relief.

    Amazon:

Shopping can be made very easy through this App. Products scan(photo or barcode) are remembered so that it can be bought later.

    Pac Man

Pac Man, historical and one of the most famous game is a must for game lovers

    Astro

Astro is an Android Task manager to kill useless background application to run the phone at top speed. Astro is also a pretty good file manager.

    Facebook:

A must have Apps on every smart phone, so how can you miss it on Android. Does not need any intro or does it ?

    Flixster:

Flixster is all about movies, whats being played in the theatres, reviews and ratings. Every movie lover need to have it.

    FxCamera:

Free camera application with photo effects like Polaroid, Fish eye etc.

    Goggles:

In my view this a revolutionary Appf or visual search. It can show information about books, buildings, places, business cards and even art work.

There are many more Google applications(Google Calendar, Google Finance,Gogole Earth, Google Shopper,Google Talk, Google Buzz,Gmail) and third party Applications that i like to mention but i think its enough for one post.

    A Briefer History of Time

A briefer history of time is an update version of the earlier book A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking with Leaonard Mladinow. A Brief history of time was best seller for 237 weeks on the London Sunday Times and it was a miraculous success for a book that was written to deal with one of the most challenging and abstract issues in modern physics.

A Briefer History of Time is briefer than the first book and some of the technical discussion has been left out for the sake of readability and briefness. It deals with the recent progress in String Theory , Unified theory or Theory of Everything. It also includes observations made by COBE(Cosmic Background Explore Satellite) and Hubble Telescope.

The book starts with the discussion of Universe, its expansion, scientific theories about universe, Newton’s Universe, Relativity, curved spaces, expanding universe, big bang, black holes, evolution of the Universe, Quantum gravity, worm holes and Time travel, force of nature and the unification of physics.

    Molecular Biology

    A cell

    Image via Wikipedia

One of my friend is studying Molecular biology in lahore and Molecular Biology according to her is as follows:

The field of molecular biology studies macro molecules and the macro molecular mechanisms found in living things, such as the molecular nature of the gene and its mechanisms of gene replication, mutation, and expression.

The field of molecular biology arose from the convergence of work by geneticists, physicists, and structural chemists on a common problem: the structure and function of the gene.

In the early twentieth century, although the nascent field of genetics was guided by Mendel's law of segregation, the actual mechanisms of gene reproduction, mutation and expression remained unknown. aik
The techniques of molecular biology enabled numerous other fields to go molecular. The study of cells was transformed from descriptive cytology into molecular cell biology. Molecular evolution developed as a phylogenetic method for the comparison of DNA sequences and whole genomes.

The term Molecular Biology was most probably invented by Warren Weaver in late 1930.

In plain words, its the branch of biology that studies life at Molecular level which is mainly concerned with the systems of cell, including DNA,RNA,proteins and their interactions.
